Transition from Google to Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication

What’s Changing
Over the next few months, FIT is changing how we verify a person’s identity when they log in to FIT’s Google Workspace applications (Gmail, Drive, Calendar, etc.). Transitioning from using Google’s 2-step Authentication (also known as 2FA) to Microsoft’s Multi-Factor Authentication system. This change is important because it strengthens our security posture while providing you with additional features.

Why This Matters
Recent security incidents targeting FIT accounts have highlighted the need for enhanced protection. These attempts primarily targeted accounts without advanced security measures. We’re implementing this more robust solution, which utilizes multi-factor authentication, to protect our entire community.

Transition Timeline & Support
We’re implementing a phased approach to this transition:

  • Phase 1: High-risk users who haven’t registered for Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR). When you register for SSPR, you also complete the steps needed to use Microsoft’s Multi-Factor Authentication!
  • Additional phases: Scheduled over the coming months

You’ll receive a notification before your transition date with specific instructions. This gradual rollout ensures our TechHelp staff can properly support anyone needing additional assistance with the transition and minimize disruption to your work, and of course to teaching and learning.
