SUNY Phone Scam

What happened?
We’ve been made aware of a phone scam targeting students at other SUNY campuses where criminals are impersonating SUNY Admissions or other administrative offices and asking for sensitive information. To give the appearance of credibility these attackers are also using a technique called “caller ID spoofing” to make it appear that the call is coming from the SUNY campus.

What can you do to protect yourself?
Other SUNY schools have reported this scam, and it is possible FIT students may be targeted, even potentially at their home phone numbers. If you receive one of these calls, do not provide any information and hang up. SUNY and FIT representatives do not request sensitive information such as your Social Security number over the phone. Additionally, SUNY does not contact FIT students on behalf of FIT.

Where can you get more information?
If you receive a phone call that is suspicious asking for personal information from Admissions or other FIT offices, hang up and contact the relevant office at the number published on the FIT website at fitnyc.edu.
