SPAM Emails with fake job offers

Recently FIT has seen a large increase in incoming spam and phishing emails, aimed at both students and employees. These emails typically come from Gmail addresses and pretend to be forwarded from another account, usually a Yahoo account. (The sender and subject lines vary, making it impossible to filter them out.) They claim to be discussing lucrative job offers from CareerBuilder and other sources. We have reason to believe these emails are fake, aimed at getting recipients to contact the sender and divulge personal information.

What can you do to protect yourself?

  • Remember the “4 Don’ts” of protecting yourself in email:

    • Don’t assume emails are benign.

    • Don’t open emails from people you don’t know with subjects that don’t make sense.

    • Don’t divulge personal information unless you’re completely sure who you’re dealing with.

    • Don’t download anything from untrusted sources.
