Beware of Free File Converters

FIT Information Technology Information Security

The FBI has recently issued a warning about an increase in scam websites that offer free online file conversion services. Rather than providing genuine conversions, these sites often download malware onto victims’ computers. The FBI emphasized the risk of malware leading to ransomware attacks and the installation of browser hijackers and adware from similar sites. How the Scam Works
Cybercriminals promote popular file conversion services to lure victims, with common conversions such as .doc to .pdf files and vice versa. Although these file converters may initially function correctly, the files downloaded in the background may contain hidden malware capable of collecting sensitive information from the affected device. This malware can gather various types of personal data, including login credentials and financial information.

Here are some recent examples of scam domains. While we have blocked access to these sites on campus at FIT, it is crucial to remain vigilant and protect yourself while using the Internet at home as well.

  • Imageconvertors[.]com
  • Convertitoremp3[.]it
  • convertisseurs-pdf[.]com
  • Convertscloud[.]com
  • convertix-api[.]xyz
  • convertallfiles[.]com
  • Freejpgtopdfconverter[.]com
  • Primeconvertapp[.]com
  • 9convert[.]com
  • Convertpro[.]org

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Avoid Untrusted Websites: Only use reputable software for file conversion, such as Microsoft and Adobe.
  • Be Cautious of Freeware: Free software can sometimes contain hidden malware or unwanted programs.
  • Use Anti-Virus Software: Make sure your personal device has up-to-date anti-virus protection.

Stay vigilant and protect yourself from online threats. Remember that using reputable services and maintaining strong security practices can help you avoid becoming a victim of these scams. Stay safe online!
