What is Remote Access?
Remote access allows access to an on-campus FIT computer and the FIT network from an off-campus computer and location.
How does Remote Access work?
Remote access to the FIT network is accomplished by implementation of Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology. VPN is a technology that creates an encrypted connection over a less secure network. The benefit of using VPN is that it ensures the appropriate level of security to the connected systems when the underlying network infrastructure alone cannot provide it. VPN does support the use of mobile devices such as phones and tablets, you must use VPN on a computer to successfully connect.
Who can get Remote Access?
Remote access is normally provided to those employees with a requirement to monitor the performance of critical servers in the IT Data Center or to perform maintenance, upgrades or patches on critical systems or applications. Additionally, approved FIT employees with the need to conduct FIT business from a remote location, such as from home or while traveling, may be granted remote access.
How do I request Remote Access?
FIT employees wishing to be granted remote access to the FIT network must complete the Employee VPN Access Request Form with appropriate justification. The form must be approved by the department vice president. Completed forms should be emailed to email@example.com.
Consultants with a contractual relationship with the College may be granted remote access to work on technology projects or technology-related initiatives upon the completion and approval of the Consultant VPN Access Request Form. Completed forms should be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Where are Remote Access Forms available?
The VPN Access Request Form and the Consultant VPN Access Request Form are accessible to FIT Faculty and Staff through MyFIT.
- Log in to MyFIT
- Select the MyFIT Tab
- Select Information Technology from the top banner
- Select Forms and Resources from the left-hand menu
What happens after Remote Access is approved?
After an FIT employee submits the completed VPN Access Request Form to TechHelp@fitnyc.edu a ticket will be generated and sent to the user. Approved users will receive the “next step” instructions needed to set up the VPN access or may visit TechHelp in C305B to have a technician configure their remote computer to connect to their FIT workstation.
** FIT prohibits the use of third-party Remote Access programs, such as Teamviewer and LogMeIn**
