The importance of installing virus protection software and keeping it up-to-date cannot be stressed enough. FIT recommends Sophos Home for the FIT community.
For Visiting Interns that are residents of FIT Dorms but not registered students at FIT, we recommend you check with your college’s IT Department to see what virus protection software they provide. If you do not have virus protection software and your college does not offer any options you can install Sophos Home after you verify that your computer meets the system requirements for Sophos Home. Additionally, all Visiting Interns should review the information available on the IT Welcome Guide for Visiting Interns.
Update your Virus Protection Software Often
Virus protection software companies send out updates constantly to ensure that your computer is protected from all the latest threats. Be sure to update your virus protection software often, many allow you to set automatic updates. If you install or installed Sophos Home, updates push automatically when you are connected to the internet.
Why do I have to have virus protection on my Mac?
The FIT Network is available to anyone with a valid FIT username and password. To ensure the network is secure we require all users regardless of machine type and operating system to have up-to-date virus protection software. While there are fewer known viruses that infect mac computers there are many viruses that can be on a mac but not executed; meaning your mac can be a carrier of a virus and infect other computers on the FIT network.
